Roof Above’s New Housing for the Chronically Homeless in Charlotte

McKibbon Family Foundation and hotel development & renovations firm, McKibbon Places, recently joined Charlotte non-profit, Roof Above, and fellow community partners in celebrating the much-anticipated grand opening of Roof Above’s new, permanent supportive housing complex, Rise on Clanton. The 88-room complex, which was purchased and renovated with the support of $3 million in grants and an interest-free loan from the McKibbon Family Foundation and converted from a former Quality Inn hotel through community fundraising and assistance efforts, is now serving Charlotteans who have experienced chronic homelessness, providing access to onsite healthcare, education, employment resources and other supportive services and staff.

“We couldn’t be more excited to see the Rise on Clanton facility come to life and are honored and humbled to have contributed to such an important project and cause,” said John McKibbon, McKibbon Family Foundation founder. “It is truly inspiring to see the Charlotte community work together to collectively create a viable solution to end homelessness and provide much-needed services and support to Charlotte’s most vulnerable individuals.”

John McKibbon was introduced to Roof Above and inspired to get involved with the organization’s mission by Charlotte philanthropist and author Kathy Izard, who helped raise $10 million to build Rise on Clanton’s predecessor, Moore Place.

“When I met John McKibbon at a speaking event in Asheville four years ago, I had no idea what an invaluable partner he would become for Roof Above,” said Kathy Izard. “From financial resources to technical assistance and even volunteer manpower, John and his teams are an inspiring model for what great corporate philanthropy can be. We are truly grateful they have become an integral partner to welcoming people home.”

Roof Above’s programs and Moore Place facility have helped house and support over 1,000 chronically homeless individuals in Mecklenburg County, inspiring countless other programs across the country.
